Most people associate it with unbelievable acts they’ve seen on stage or in movies and are quick to dismiss it. I won’t lie, when my friends first persuaded me to give hypnotism a try, I was highly skeptical myself. So what changed? |
Going from skeptic to believer
I first attended an intensive hypnotherapy course several years ago. For the first 3 days of the course, I was probably much like you...unconvinced and I thought the whole thing was a bit weird.
Out of all the students, I was proud to say I was the biggest skeptic.
So on the fourth day when an opportunity came to get hypnotized by the teacher in front of the entire class, I was quick to volunteer. I wanted to prove to my fellow students just how foolish this whole hypnotherapy thing was. Boy was I in for a surprise.
As I sat in front of the class and the teacher began speaking to me, I quickly became uncomfortable. All my attention was brought to my feelings, and I squirmed in my seat as suddenly I found myself in a very deep and dark place. However, this place was familiar…
It was an isolation ward I’d been hospitalized in 5 years prior when I came down with dengue fever, nile fever and tick fever all at the same time. Because the doctors initially thought I had meningitis, I had to undergo a spinal tap which was a traumatically painful experience. While I hadn’t consciously thought about this in years, I was now reliving it again, and all the fear of death and pain I experienced during this time was suddenly right in front of me. That’s when I heard the very strong and direct voice of my teacher, “Are you ready to let go of this?”
“Yeah”, I said thinking to myself, “Of course I want to let go of this.” And the next thing I knew, I was back in the classroom sitting in front of my fellow students...however, things were different now. The back pain I’d been living with on a daily basis had completely vanished, and I felt as if a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. For the first time in years, I stood up and walked around without feeling an ounce of pain. It was incredible!
The difference, however, was not only to the way I felt, but also the way I looked. My fellow students in class were amazed by the transformation of my physical appearance. The gray shadow on my skin (and especially around my eyes) had suddenly lifted, and several of my peers exclaimed I looked 5 years younger! The bigger shock came later that evening when I returned home. My husband and daughter thought I had got a facelift! When I told them I was at my hypnotherapy class, they couldn’t believe it and were sure I had spent my day relaxing at the spa instead.
Looking back on this experience, what amazes me most is just how deep I had buried the pain from my time at the hospital. I had accepted my back pain as a way of life and developed coping mechanisms to avoid thinking about it. Hypnotherapy helped me confront and release this pain, completely changing my life in the process. Not only did I look and feel different, but my attitude changed too. Whereas before I was often pessimistic, suddenly I was upbeat and focused on all the possibilities ahead of me. Once I qualified as hypnotherapist, I was determined to share this incredible tool to help others. I have continued my training to include specialisation in academic excellence, stop smoking, past life regression, and inner child integration therapy.

Through hypnotherapy, I’ve helped hundreds of clients overcome fears, the emotional trauma of divorce, excel in their studies and careers, and more. And I’m confident I can do the same for you.
Outside of hypnotherapy, I’m an avid traveler. While I currently divide my time between Nairobi, London, Bangkok and Lisbon, I’ve also lived in Port Vila, Casablanca, Recife, Maputo and Paris. When I’m not helping my clients live more fulfilling lives, I enjoy spending time sailing, reading, forest walking and watching movies.
